PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method for automatically recognizing defining information of each item of a slip by analyzing the table structure of the slip from the physical arrangement of the smallest rectangle consisting of vertical and horizontal ruled lines so as to determine an attribute of the smallest rectangle. SOLUTION: A reader 1000 optically reads a slip and a processor 1001 analyzes the slip recognize characters. An entry wen-yen dictionary 1003 in a memory 1002 stores a previously fixed entry wen-yen and its image data and a general dictionary 1004 stores a dictionary by each character recognizing category/character font in order to recognize the characters in a data part. In a CPU 1001, a ruled line extracting part 1005 extracts the ruled lines of the slip and the smallest rectangle consisting of the ruled lines and an analyzing part 1006 analyzes the arrangement of the extracted smallest rectangle to analyze table structure. An attribute deciding part 1007 decides the attribute of each smallest rectangle and a character recognizing part 1008 recognizes the characters in accordance with its attribute.
