PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image reader which can inexpensively detect the position of the end edge of an original, without requiring excess time for the detection. SOLUTION: In this image reader 1 provided with an image read means 4 which reads an original, while moving relative to the original, an original detecting means 5 which detects the end edge of the original is provided in the front of the reading means 4 in the relatively moving direction of the means 4 (sub-scanning direction), so that the detecting means 5 moves integrally with the read means 4 and detect the end edge of the original at a position B, which is in the front of the original reading position A of the read means 4 by a prescribed length L in the relatively moving direction.
