PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magneto-resistive thin-film magnetic head with which the wear of the head adequately for a helical scan type magnetic recording and reproducing device is less and the influence of uneven wear is less. SOLUTION: A magneto-resistive(MR) element 1 is held by a pair of substrates 12a and 12b via a protective film 2. Material having high wear resistance is used for the substrates 12a and 12b. Nonmagnetic material which is inferior in wear resistance is packed to both sides of the magnetic pole part of the MR element 1. The progression of the wear of the magnetic head may then be minimized by the substrates 12a and 12b. The uneven wear occurs in the magnetic pole of the MR element 1 but a magnetic tape sinks into the unevenly worn magnetic pole part at the time of traveling and, therefore, comes into good contact with the magnetic pole, by which the spacing loss may be lessened.
