PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an apparatus and a method for the detection of a steering angle for a vehicle, in which a steering middle-point position can be found with a simple constitution, without an error and in a short time. SOLUTION: This apparatus is provided with a disk plate 12 which is installed at a steering shaft 11 and on which first marks 12b formed at equal intervals and a second mark 12a indicating a steering middle-point position are formed. The apparatus is provided with two sets of detection parts 14a, 14b which detect the first marks 12b, a counting means 16 which obtains a direction of rotation on the basis of the phase difference between respective detection signals and which counts detections of the first marks 12b so as to obtain a steering angle, a middle-point detecting means 30a which detects the steering middle-point position on the basis of the second mark 12a, and a counter resetting means 30b resets a counted value on the basis of the output of the middle-point detecting means 30b. The counter resetting means 30b does not reset the counted value even when the steering middle-point position is detected when the angle of direction is within a prescribed range.
