PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a binder for a magnetic recording medium such as a magnetic tape or a magnetic disk having superior characteristics contained in a magnetic layer formed on a nonmagnetic substrate. SOLUTION: A magnetic layer consisting essentially of a magnetic material and a binder is formed on a nonmagnetic substrate to obtain the objective magnetic recording medium. A polyester resin and/or a polyurethane resin containing 300-2,000 equivalent fluorene rings based on 1 ton resin is contained as the binder component of the magnetic layer.
