PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dense magnetic head slider which suppresses the occurrence of voids even after processing such as irradiation with ions, has high fine processability and attains superior smoothness. SOLUTION: The magnetic head slider comprises a silicon carbide sintered compact consisting of 0.1-0.8 wt.% boron, <=0.3 wt.% free carbon and the balance silicon carbide and having >=99% relative density. The average grain diameter of the silicon carbide grains in the sintered compact is preferably >=10μm. The magnetic head slider preferably has a sliding surface processed by irradiation with ions and having >=10 nm surface roughness (Rmax). The average number of voids having >=0.2μm size in a 320μm2 region of the sliding surface is preferably <=4.
