A shell enabling a gas to contact particles has the two parallel ends of two surfaces of different radius connected together by two curved corners. The smaller radius surface is made from longitudinal threads arrange equidistantly around its circumference and mounted on transverse supports to define perforations on the outer surface of the shell. An Independent claim is included for the following a device having a vertical tank with a central perforated conduit and vertically extending shells as above arranged around the internal circumference of the tank. Particles fill the space between the shells and the conduit. Preferred Features: The curved corners form transition curves between the surfaces. The supports have a rectangular section and extend into the inside of the shell. The supports are spaced equidistantly at 0.1-10% of their length. The larger radius surface of the shell is not perforated.
