PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication system, the serviceability of which can be improved by making extension numbers allocable according to requests from users and a method for deciding the extension number of the system. SOLUTION: A communication system is constituted by connecting multiplexers 200, which communicate communication signals which are communicated through a plurality of telephone lines via WAN lines by packeting the signals and a node 100 connected to the Internet 101, etc., via digital leased lines or digital public lines 103. When the node 100 receives an extension number allocating request from one of the multiplexers 200, the node 100 allocates a prescribed extension number from among extension numbers managed by the node 100 and informs the multiplexer 200 of the number. The multiplexer 200 informs a telephone set of the informed number, by using a caller number informing function after confirming that the telephone set of the number is in an idle state. At the same time, the node 100 decides the extension number in the system, depending upon the response from the telephone set.
