PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time required for starting playing of an optical disk by making kind data of a selected disk as a kind of a disk when the kind data is stored, and discriminating a kind when it is not stored. SOLUTION: A disk loading position number is specified by an operation button of a user interface section 6 and a disk to be played is selected. When disk kind data for this specified number is stored in a disk kind storing section 502, a disk to be played is judged as a recorded disk kind. When disk kind data is not recorded, kind discriminating operation of a disk to be played is performed, kind information on an optical disk discriminated by a disk kind discriminating section 204 is corresponded with a disk loading position, and stored in the storing section 502. When a disk kind to be played is decided, a system controller 501 adapts an optical system and a control system of an optical disk kind to processing operation of a Rf signal processing section 201, a servo processor section 202, and a data processor section 203 of a signal processing section 2.
