PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a display failure such as disturbance in the alignment of a liquid crystal and decrease in the holding rate caused by ionic impurities by selectively disposing an ion adsorbing substance in a nondisplay region. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device 1 is produced by laminating a pair of substrates 2, 3 with a sealing resin 4 and a spacer 5 and then sealing a nematic liquid crystal 6 between the substrates 2, 3. The sealing resin 4 consists of a thermosetting epoxy polymer resin, and the spacer 5 consists of bead-like silica. The sealing resin 4 and a nondisplay region 7 contain an ion adsorbing substance 8. The ion adsorbing substance 8 consists of bead-shape particles consisting of a strong acid cation exchange resin and a strong base anion exchange resin. On the substrate 2, a transparent film 10 is formed only in the display region 9 so that a step 13 is formed on the border of the display region 9. The step 13 acts to prevent the ion adsorbing substance 8 selectively disposed in the nondisplay region 7 from moving to the display region 9.
