摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extend the max. time for use with low power consumption by forming active liquid crystal regions each region of which can be switched between first and second liquid crystal states and forming a separation region containing a region having a stable third liquid crystal state. SOLUTION: The active region A is regulated by the overlapped row and column electrodes in the liquid crystal region, and when voltage pulses are applied, the liquid crystals in the active region A can be controlled to a 0 deg. twist state and 360 deg. twist state. A separation region I is formed between two active regions A to separate them and to stabilize the two metastable states in each active region. The separation region is formed as a stable twisted HAN liquid crystal state, and in order to obtain a stable separation region, the pretilt angle of one alignment film in the region corresponding to the separation region is controlled preferably to about 45 deg. or larger, and more preferably to 90 deg.. The active region A is preferably completely surrounded by the separation region I in order to effectively separate the active regions A by the separation region I.
