PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a heightwise size of the whole of a recording medium recording apparatus which records and/or reproduces two kinds of media (e.g. CDs and MDs) by a common optical pickup. SOLUTION: A drive unit 3 and a holder 4 are arranged inside a main chassis, which are moved up and down by slide cam plates set to both side plates of the main chassis. A turntable 57 for CD, a turntable 58 for MD and an optical pickup are loaded to the drive unit 3. The drive unit 3 is positioned above the holder 4 when a CD 13 is reproduced, partly overlapping in plane with the holder 4. The drive unit 3 is overlapped in plane with the holder 4 below the holder 4 when an MD 14 is to be recorded/reproduced by moving the drive unit 3 and holder 4 up and down together in a state free from the overlapping.
