PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head in which magnetic domains in a magnetic pole core are easily stabilized. SOLUTION: The surface of a base layer 16 for the formation of magnetic pole layers 15 (upper magnetic pole layer and lower magnetic pole layer) of a thin film magnetic head has different surface levels by alternately forming projections 17 and recesses 18 parallel to a sliding face 19 for a magnetic medium. By this method, the surface profile of the magnetic pole layers is made almost same as the different surface levels so that domains with the magnetic walls aligned in the direction of the projections and recesses are formed by the influences of the shape anisotropy. Thereby, since longitudinal magnetic walls (magnetic domains) in the direction perpendicular to the sliding face for a recording medium are not produced, the domains are stabilized.
