A method for preparing a nano-size particulate graphite, which comprises irradiating a high energy beam such as electron beam, gamma -ray, X-ray or ion beam to a soot type carbon such as carbon black being provided by subjecting a carbon-containing compound such as a hydrocarbon or an aromatic oil to an incomplete combustion or a thermal decomposition and then subjecting the irradiated carbon to a heat treatment. The method can be used for preparing a multi-layer fullerrene, in particular, an onion-like carbon, which is a nano-size particulate graphite, in high purity and with good efficiency.
