The mat (1) which can be of a size to fit under part of the patient or can be a full size mattress comprises three sections. The upper support section (7) has an upper surface (11) which is formed from multi-filament fibres and has grooves formed in the top. The remainder of the upper section is formed from mono-filament fibres (12). A middle section (8) is formed from mono filament fibres and is shaped so as to provide air gaps (22) which are important when separating the sections. A lower suction layer consists of a fleece mattress (17) with a high proportion of viscous fibres enclosed by a water proof cover (18) made from coated plastic. The whole unit, comprising the upper section, the middle section and the lower suction section can be separated from each other and rejoined without damage by means of a tear strip connector (4). |
