In a process to extract xenon by the cryogenic fractionated distillation of a mixture of oxygen and xenon (1,4), the mixture is introduced into the middle or upper section of a diffusion column (5) into the base of which an inert gas (6) e.g. argon is introduced. A residual gas (9) is extracted from the upper end of the column (5), and a concentration of krypton-xenon (8) is extracted from the base of the column. In further fractionated distillation stage (12) raw xenon (13) is extracted from the krypton-xenon concentration and is discharged into a pure xenon column (20) where it enters a head condenser (22) where it comes into indirect contact with a coolant (25). A xenon product fraction is removed from the upper part of the pure xenon column (20). A portion especially of the residual gas (9) is employed as a coolant (25) in the pure xenon column (20) condenser (24).
