A relay magnet usually comprises a coil, a soft iron core and a reed moving in accordance with the magnetic field induced in the coil. The invention concerns a method for reducing production costs and consumption, in particular when the reed is maintained in closed position, which consists in replacing the soft iron core with ordinary steel. The reed is maintained in closed position by the retentivity of the core. In order to reduce consumption during demagnetisation, the energy accumulated during magnetisation is stored in a capacitor (C1) to be applied to the coil during demagnetisation.
