The communication device has an operating device (2) which is incorporated within the automobile (1), coupled to a roof-mounted transponder (3) with an external antenna (4), allowing data communication with a telematic service. The link between the operating device and the roof-mounted transponder may be provided by the automobile onboard electrical supply system. An Independent claim for an application of a communication device to an automatic charging system for road use is also included.
