A method for monitoring a rail vehicle (3) in which during operational travel of the rail vehicle (3) ultrasound is coupled into a wheel (1) of the vehicle, and during the movement, a component of the ultrasound which is decoupled or tapped from the wheel, is detected and the resultant measurement signals are evaluated for monitoring the wheel condition. The measurement signals are continuously supplied to a mobile evaluation unit (31) in the rail vehicle (3) and/or to a stationary evaluation unit (33) in a control desk (35).
