The laser system has a laser active material with a flat reflective surface, at least one pump light beam for pumping the laser active material and a hollow mirror arrangement for repeatedly directing pump light reflected from the flat surface via a flat mirror (32) directly back to the laser active material. The hollow mirror arrangement has a single hollow mirror (30) whose reflective inner surface forms part of a rotation ellipsoid and has at least one opening (38) via which a laser radiation field (34) extends during operation. The reflective flat surface and each flat mirror are mounted near a rotation ellipsoid focal point.
