<p>A method by which a user certifies an identity thereof to a vendor. The user is provided with a table (10) of indexed codes (12). The vendor is provided with either an identical table or a mechanism for generating the table. The vendor chooses an index at random and transmits the index to the user. The user looks up the code indexed by the received index on the user's table and transmits the code to the vendor. The vendor compares the received code to the code indexed by the transmitted index on the vendor's table. In one embodiment of the method, a credit card provider provides merchants with access to a common mechanism for generating the tables of many users. If a merchant displays a suspicious pattern index generation for one of the users, that merchant is barred from access to the mechanism.</p> |
