Apparatus for risk assessment of chemicals comprising a container for receiving an isolated section of an aquatic biotope, comprising a sediment layer, an overlying water layer and optionally plant, animal and/or microbial organisms, and a device for partitioning off a vertical section of the biotope from above the water layer to the bottom of the sediment layer. An Independent claim is also included for a risk assessment method using the apparatus, comprising: (i) introducing the biotope into the container; (ii) adding a test chemical to the biotope; (iii) isolating a vertical section of the biotope using the partitioning device; (iv) introducing first-stage insect larvae into the water layer of the isolated section, where the insect is one whose larval development occurs in the sediment layer; and (v) determining the number of adult insects emerging after larval development and pupation.
