A system and method for recovering material properties of non-rigid objects. The method includes, establishing a plurality of three-dimensional point correspondences (Pj and Qj) of the non-rigid object in an unstressed (108) and stressed (110) states, from the plurality of point correspondences, generating a finite element model (106) of non-rigid body having initial material properties and generating a finite element strain distribution, detecting abnormal areas of the non-rigid body by comparing finite element strain levels from the strain distribution.
