A coated panel for use in constructing a mine stopping has a sandwich structure and comprises a panel of a lightweight material e.g. foamed polystyrene where opposite faces of the panel have a coating of a fire resistant material such as a silicate mortar, at least one of the coatings having a reinforcement in the form of a steel mesh or fibres therein. The lightweight material has a density of less than 500, preferably less than 200 kg/cubic metre and may be made of an expanded material. The thickness of the uncoated panel may be from 2cm to 15cm and the thickness of the coatings may be from 0.5mm to 3cm.
