A method of treating hair loss comprising administering a composition comprising a cardiac-sparing compound characterized by structure (I) and pharmaceutically acceptable salts, hydrates, and biohydrolyzable amides, esters, and imides thereof, wherein: R1 is -(CH2)n(CHNR7R8)mC(O)R9; n is an integer from 1 to 3; m is an integer from 0 to 1; R3 and R5 are each, independently, selected from the group consisting of chlorine, bromine, iodine, and -CH3, R7 and R8 are each, independently, selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and C1-C4 alkyl; R9 is selected from the group consisting of hydroxy, C1-C4 alkoxy, and -NR7R8; R31 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, chlorine, bromine, iodine, C1-C4 alkyl, C4-C6 cycloalkyl, C1-C4 haloalkyl, C4-C6 halocycloalkyl, and -CH(R10)Ar; Ar is selected from the group consisting of 5-hydroxypyrid-2-yl, 6-hydroxypyrid-3-yl, 6-hydroxypyridazin-3-yl, 6-methoxypyridazin-3-yl N-oxide, and 6-hydroxypyridazin-3-yl N-oxide; R10 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and C1-C4 alkyl; and R41 is selected from the group consisting of hydroxy and C1-C4 alkoxy.
