PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate a few auxiliary pattern dictionary for reinforcing the weak point of an existing dictionary and to realize highly precise pattern recognition. SOLUTION: The recognition result of a learning object pattern, which is recognized by using a prescribed pattern dictionary, and a feature vector are inputted (101). The nearby areas of the respective feature vectors are obtained (102). The maximum nearby area is obtained from the nearby areas. A processing for obtaining the next maximum nearby area except for the feature vector belonging to the area is repeated (103 and 106). A dictionary item is decided from the respective maximum nearby areas (104) and it is written into a pattern dictionary 107 as dictionary information (105).
