The automobile bench seat has a seat squab and a seat backrest which can be folded down and angled at an adjustable inclination angle relative to the seat squab. The carrier frame (1) for the seat backrest is attached to a support column (2) aligned with the vertical longitudinal centre plane of the vehicle and secured to a pivot mounting (4) allowing it to be adjusted to the vertical in conjunction with the backrest. A spring-loaded locking bolt (5) cooperates with the pivot mounting to lock the support column and hence the seat backrest, e.g. in the event of a crash.
