The method involves stretching the belt or band, so that the spacing of two running elements is enlarged until a path between two marks on the band is increased by a determined percentage. The belt is stretched until the marks fit under marks indicating a desired percentage stretch marked on a transparent template. Several paths of different lengths are proved on the band, which are limited by a common first mark (3) at one end and by second marks (4) arranged one behind the other. A transparent template (5) has corresponding marks, where each second mark (7) of the template represents a desired stretching percentage, when the first mark (6) is placed on the first mark (3) of the band or belt. The band or belt is stretched until the second mark on the band or belt is covered by the desired second mark on the template. Independent claims are included for a belt or band for use with the method and for a transparent template for use with the method.
