The tongs have a pair of relatively pivoted jaws (1,2) provided by 2-armed levers fitted with tools at their working ends (7,8), one jaw having an attached handgrip (5) and receiving an operating piston, acting on the drive end (9) of the second jaw, which is provided with a pivoted distance piece (11), acted on by a tension spring (19). A pivoted operating element (24) moves the distance piece against the spring bias into the path of movement of the operating piston, for closure of the jaws, the operating element having a cam (40) for operation of a switch (30) when the closure position is reached.
