A system (10) and method for precisely determining fuel delivery signal puls e widths for driving fuel injectors (14). The arrangement determines the pulse widths in time units independent of engine crankshaft angular measurements. A proposed first pulse width time is determined. A proposed first quantity of fuel to be delivered by the fuel injector (14) based on the proposed first pulse width time is determined. A desired total quantity of fuel to be delivered by the fuel injector (14) is determined and the proposed first quantity of fuel is compared with the desired total quantity of fuel. The proposed first pulse width time is utilized for controlling the fuel injecto r (14) if the proposed first quantity of fuel is less than or equal to the desired total quantity of fuel.
