A system and method is provided which allow each 3D icon (400) on the desktop to be dynamically transformed, resized, or reshaped using a mouse or any other input device available to the user. The 3D icons may be bitmapped-based or vector-based, and when the user desires to manipulate the icon, a framework (405) of "handles" (415) is used to transform the icon as desired.
