In a phase change coupling for allowing the relative angular positions of a drive member 10 and a camshaft 12 to be varied, a locking mechanism is provided for preventing rotation of the drive member relative to the camshaft in one direction during cranking of an associated engine so that, during such cranking, the drive member 10 is rotated in only the opposite direction relative to the camshaft by camshaft torque reversals until the coupling reaches a predetermined start-up angular position. The locking mechanism may be a one-way clutch which is hydraulically released, Fig 2, or speed responsive, Fig 3, or electrically actuated. |
