Microfluidic device

A microfluidic device comprises a hydrophilic/hydrophobic boundary which forms a valve in a fluid pathway 13. The device is typically a compact disc 10 adapted for rotation about an axis and may comprise a fluid inlet 20 at the centre and a fluid outlet 19 towards the circumference. The device may include one or more predetermined fluid channels having alternate hydrophilic and hydrophobic areas (14-15, Fig. 7). Preferably, at least some of the hydrophilic areas are adapted to permit cell culture. Gas pathways may also be present to enable the cell culture to be supplied with air.
