PURPOSE: Controlling device and method for an automatic transmission in a vehicle are provided to momentarily accelerate the vehicle through increasing an output of an engine by fixing a present transmission range with operating a lock-up switch. CONSTITUTION: By applying power, an operation is started. After initializing memory variables, a signal inputted from a lock-up switch is read for deciding on state of the lock-up switch. In case of off state of the lock-up switch, a signal inputted from a vehicle speed sensor is read for detecting a vehicle speed. A signal inputted from a throttle position sensor is read for detecting an opening angle of a throttle valve. By using a speed change pattern, satisfaction of speed changing condition is decided. Then, the speed is changed by the speed change pattern. In case of on state of the lock-up switch, a momentary acceleration mode is displayed. Then, a present transmission range is fixed for preventing accelerating speed change.
