A positioner (5) locates the tape (1), to be severed by a gripping, stretching and breaking system (6). Ends of the tape are positioned transversely with respect to the direction of bin (2, 3) movement. The equipment is placed between the bins, one (3) being filled, the other (2) full and in an ejected position. An Independent claim is included for the corresponding method of breaking a textile tape. Preferred features: The tape positioner (5) is a grip arm pivoted to move in a vertical plane between bins, and between extremes of position. At one extreme, the arm is retracted, allowing bin movement. At the other, the tape is presented to the breaking system (6). With appropriate pivoting attachments to the machine frame, the arm is turned through an angle by an actuator. The actuator is pneumatic, hydraulic, or electromechanical, optionally a geared motor. The axis of articulation is close to the top of the bin being filled. The arm is bent into a U-shape, the ends being articulated (5') to the machine frame. The space enclosed by the U-shape allows it to clear the severing system (6) on either side. The positioner may be formed by an arm fixed to a carriage sliding between extreme positions. The grip arm articulation axis may be located near the lower part of the bin (3) being filled. Further variants based on the foregoing principles are also described.
