The fan impeller is contained within a housing split into two sections (50,51) which are sealed in relation to each other. Flexible seals (58) are provided between the interfacing walls (61,65 and 62,65) of the housing sections. Spacers are provided between the housing sections to maintain a predetermined clear height (70) between them. In the region of the spacers the housing sections are directly pressurized when the housing is closed, while they are acted upon by the seals in their reciprocally sealed area (52).
