PURPOSE: An apparatus for temporarily controlling recording/playing operations of luminance adaptive video data is provided to record broadcasting signals in a VCR(Video Cassette Recorder) recording medium and to interrupt video signals played in a VCR, while light is incident on a screen, and to output a warning message, so as to make a user capable of continuously watching the screen. CONSTITUTION: A video data recording/playing device decides where sources of video data played in a displayer(28) exist. If the sources are broadcast signals, the recording/playing device detects a light quantity incident while the broadcast signals are displayed in the displayer(28). The recording/playing device compares the detected light quantity with a reference light quantity. If the light quantity is over the reference light quantity, the recording/playing device outputs a video signal recording control signal to record the broadcast signals in a recording medium. If the sources are video data played in a play medium, the recording/playing device detects a light quantity incident while the video data are displayed in the displayer(28). The recording/playing device compares the detected light quantity with the reference light quantity. If the light quantity is over the reference quantity, the recording/playing device converts a play mode into a stop mode, then interrupts a video data playing. If the light quantity is below the reference quantity, the recording/playing device displays a warning message indicating a watching improbability relating to the video data.
