NOVEL CHEMICAL COMPOUND AND THE USE AS A PREVENTIVE MEDICINE FOR DENTAL CARIES

PURPOSE: Provided is a novel compound, (-)-epiafzelechin-(4β→ 8)-afzelechin-(4α→8)-catechin, and its use as an anti-cavity agent. CONSTITUTION: An inhibitor of glucosyltransferase(GTase), an enzyme which generates cavity-causing glucan using sugar as substrate, is extracted from jack fruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus Folium). After thiolysis and the instrumental analysis, the structure is found to be a trimer of flavan-3-ol, represented by the general formula I with molecular weight of 833£M-H|and is found to inhibit the GTase completely at 1.0mM concentration.
