A cooling device is provided for establishing a capacity of performing immediately consecutive high speed submarine gel electrophoresis in a conventional gel apparatus without a buffer change. Cooling water (4), held in a liquid container (14), is placed on the top surface of a gel matrix (22) for absorbing heat from both of the gel matrix and the buffer in the conventional gel apparatus. The cooling water can be changed easily for each electrophoresis but the buffer remains in the conventional gel apparatus for multiple consecutive high speed submarine gel electrophoresis.
