PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a photographic spectral sensitizing dye which ensures little residual color due to dye stain, high sensitivity and little fog by using a specified compound. SOLUTION: The photographic spectral sensitizing dye is represented by formula I, II or III. In the formulae I-III, Z1-Z5 are respectively a group of atoms required to form a 5- or 6-membered heterocycle, a substituent bonding to the nitrogen of the heterocycle is alkyl having a group which imparts water solubility to the dye in the form of a free acid or salt, Q1-Q4 are each O, N-R0 or S, R0 is alkyl or aryl, L1-L9 are each methine, R1-R5 are each alkyl, R6 and R7 are each alkyl, amino or amino substituted alkyl, M1-M3 are respectively a counter ion for neutralizing an electric charge in each molecule, (l), (n) and (r) are respectively an integer of 0-2, (m) and (p) are respectively an integer of 0-5 and (q) is 0 or 1.
