The invention relates to a method of inhibiting the retroviral infection, which comprises administering the leukocyte semiprotease inhibitor, SLPI, an analog or derivative thereof, namely the leukocyte cysteinprotease inhibitor, CLPI, in an oral or parenteral formulation, by injecting a unit dose intravenously, subcutaneously or intramuscularly, said dose being selected from the field ranging from 10 to 1000 mg/day, preferably from 10 to 200 mg/day and optimum from 20 to 200 mg/day.
