PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a device small-sized and inexpensive and further to improve the transfer stability of an original to perform satisfactory reading. SOLUTION: A surface read part 21 reads the image information on one face while carrying an original forward by a pair 19 of carrying rollers, the original is made to be carried backward by a pair 24 of paper ejection rollers 2 capable of carrying an original forward and backward and a pair 32 of rollers after the rear edge of the original passes through a carrying path switching flapper 33, the original is led to a reverse path 34 through the flapper 33, and a rear face reading part 23 reads the image information of the other face while carrying the original forward by the pair 24 of paper ejection rollers and the pair 32 of carrying rollers again after carrying the original backward until the front edge of the original is located at the upstream side of the part 23 by the pair 32 of carrying rollers capable of carrying an original forward and backward.
