PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a coil position detector capable of exactly operating the position even for a mirror shape. SOLUTION: A slit light scanner 12 for irradiating with laser slit light, a TV camera 10 photographing images, an image synthesizer 14 for extracting a part changing brightness and forming binarization processed image, a shape operation means 16 calculating the cross sectional shape data of the part of changing brightness and a coil operation device 18 for extracting the cross sectional shape data of the coil part and calculating the coil width, the width center position, coil diameter and the diameter center position. The slit light scanner 12 irradiates the coil with a laser slit light so that a plurality of the parts changing brightness exist when seeing the coil in diameter direction. The coil operation device 18 calculates the coil width and the width direction center position for the part that a plurality of cross sectional shape data exist when the cross sectional shape data is projected to the coil diameter direction.
