A bi-directional hydroturbine assembly for tidal deployment. A hydroturbine (130) is carried by a cylindrical shroud (100). Rotation of the hydroturbine blades by tidal currents drives rotation of the shaft, thereby converting kinetic energy into electrical energy. Stabilizer fins (135) extend radially outwardly from the shroud (100) along substantially the entire length of the shroud (100). Each corner of each stabilizer fin (135) carries a pivot point (155, 160) for connection of pivoting deflectors (165, 170) between adjacent pivot points (155, 160) of adjacent stabilizer fins (135) at the same end of the shroud (100). Pivoting deflectors (165, 170) are positioned between pivot points (155, 160) about the periphery of each end of the shroud (100) and are biased such that tidal current flow in a first direction urges pivoting deflectors (165, 170) at the first end of the shroud (100) into a non-deflective position, while urging pivoting deflectors (165, 170) at the second end of the shroud (100) into a deflective position, and vice versa for tidal current flow in the opposite direction.
