The invention relates to a microprocessor-based diagnostic device, especially for motor vehicles, that comprises a series of electronic pages, such as files, every page determining a series of active areas and every active area representing a diagnostic topic. Every active area is linked with another page that relates to the diagnostic topic associated with said area, thereby guiding the user step by step through a diagnostic routine when s/he chooses the corresponding diagnostic topics.
