PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a device and method for detecting the thickness of paper leaves capable of inexpensively detecting the thickness of paper leaves with being hardly affected by foreign matter such as paper powder present in a paper leaves transferring device and environmental changes such as those in temperature in the device. SOLUTION: The oscillation frequency(f) of an oscillating circuit 11 is changed by the change of the inductance L of a coil 10 that the distance between a ferrite core 9 inside a displacement detecting sensor 8 and a ferrite plate 7 is changed by the thickness of paper leaves 2, and the oscillation frequency(f) is measured by a frequency measuring part 12 connected to the oscillating circuit 11. The amount of a displacement in a displacement detecting lever 5 i.e., a movable roller 4 is computed from an oscillation frequency f0 at the time of the absence of the paper leaves 2 and the measured oscillation frequency(f) to detect the thickness of the paper leaves 2.
