Further treatment of an exothermically-reacted mixture made from waste comprises stirring it before or after the decay of its reactivity and charging it with a CO2-containing gas, the mixture containing : (a) water, carbon, metals, metal oxides and/or other reactive materials; and (b) components which are reactive with (a) comprising free quicklime, calcined dolomite, carbon, metals, metal oxides etc in finely-divided or powdered form.
