The method involves collecting the background electromagnetic waves, i.e. so-called electrosmog, in a room using an antenna in the form of an isolated metal part. The resulting AC signal from the antenna is then amplified, and short-duration fluctuations are evaluated with a discriminator circuit to produce an output capable of triggering an alarm. An Independent claim is also included for a proximity detector for an alarm system.
