A portable telephone the user of which can change melody easily. The portable telephone (30) having storage means (37) in which melody data such as ring tones is stored and a connector (20) capable of transmitting an analog acoustic signal to the outside is provided with writing means (41, 34) for receiving digital acoustic data through a light-receiving member (40) for receiving light from the connector (20) and writing the data in the storage means (37) as melody data. Melody data in the form of an optical signal is received via an existing connector, and new melody data for rewrite can be substantially automatically received without increasing the external components. As a result, it is easy to change melody.
