The propulsion drive has an i.c. engine (1) coupled to the driven automobile wheels (9) and to an electrical machine (11) acting as a combined generator and starter motor, with an associated electronic control (15) allowing the loading of the engine by the electrical machine to be increased for effective braking of the automobile, e.g. under control of signals provided by a radar device (39) mounted at the front of the vehicle.
